When Childhood Met Adulting : A Tale of Growing Up with Cousins

There was a time when happiness meant summer vacations at our grandparents’ house, Aunt pouring water from the pipe on all of us and we dancing happily pretending as if we are enjoying rain showers, and playing endless games with our cousins. Life revolved around silly fights, shared secrets, and sneaking out together for one last game before bedtime. The biggest worry was whether we would get the biggest share of the chocolates. But then, somewhere along the way, childhood slipped through our fingers, and we entered the world of adulting—a world of responsibilities, deadlines, and stress.

The Magical Days of Childhood with Cousins

Childhood wasn’t just about toys and games; it was about the bonds we built with our cousins. They were our first best friends, our crime partners, and our biggest cheerleaders. Every visit to their house felt like a festival, filled with laughter, mischief, and endless storytelling.

We made forts out of blankets, played antakshari till our voices went hoarse, and fought over who would get the last piece of cake—only to share it in the end. Summer vacations meant carefree days of running around barefoot, whispering secrets at night, and making promises to never grow apart.

Everything felt magical. The terrace was our kingdom, the backyard was our playground, and our grandparents’ home was our paradise. There were no worries about the future, no pressure to prove anything—just the pure joy of being together.

The Reality of Adulting

And then, life changed.

One day, vacations stopped being about family and became about pending work. The same cousins who were once just a call away now became names we saw only in WhatsApp groups. Meetings replaced playtime, and responsibilities took over carefree laughter.

Now, we meet at weddings or family functions, exchanging formal smiles and quick updates about life. The fights over chocolates turned into discussions about job stress, career moves, and investments. Somewhere in this journey of growing up, we lost the innocence of those childhood bonds.

We often find ourselves reminiscing about those days—the long summer afternoons spent playing in the sun, the late-night ghost stories, and the endless teasing. But nostalgia is a bittersweet feeling because it reminds us of what we once had but can never truly relive.

Bringing Back the Magic of Childhood

But what if we don’t have to lose it completely? What if, amidst all the adulting, we could steal moments to relive those golden days?

Reconnect with your cousins. A simple call, a video chat, or even a small reunion can bring back the warmth of childhood.

Plan a cousins’ trip. Remember how we once dreamed of growing up and traveling together? Maybe it’s time to finally make it happen.

Relive old traditions. Play that childhood game again, sing antakshari, or cook those favorite snacks you once fought over.

Laugh like you used to. Not over adult worries, but over silly memories that once made you cry with laughter.

Conclusion: A Balance Between Childhood and Adulthood

Growing up doesn’t mean we have to let go of the child within us. Life is a mix of responsibilities and joy, of struggles and small victories. Maybe adulthood is not about choosing between childhood and reality, but about finding a balance—where we work hard but also take time to relive the memories that shaped us.

So, the next time life feels overwhelming, pause. Close your eyes and remember those summer afternoons, those silly fights, those whispered secrets in the dark. Because deep down, that child still lives within you, waiting for you to bring them back to life.

Dancing Soul: Let Your Movements Speak

Dance is more than just an art form for me—it is my language, my escape, and the purest expression of my emotions. From the moment I first stepped onto the stage, dance became an inseparable part of my existence. Whether I am happy, sad, or lost in thought, my body naturally moves to the rhythm of my heart. Without dance, I wouldn't be the person I am today. It is not just something I do; it is who I am

                                                  A Journey Rooted in Passion

I was first introduced to Bharatanatyam as a child, and little did I know that this traditional Indian dance form would shape my life in ways I never imagined. Training at Natyashree Kalasmati Dance Academy in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, was a transformative experience. This was not just a place where I learned dance techniques—it was where I discovered the soul of dance. It taught me discipline, patience, and, most importantly, respect for this sacred art.

Bharatanatyam is more than just movement. It is a blend of tala (rhythm), abhinaya (expression), mudras (hand gestures), and natya (drama), woven together to tell a story. Through my training, I realized that dance was not just about   performing but about communicating emotions, narrating epics, and preserving culture. Every posture, every eye movement, and every beat of the music had a meaning, and I felt honored to be a medium through which these stories could come alive.

Performing on Stage: Where I Truly Belong

From school competitions to grand performances, the stage has always been my second home. The moment I step onto it, everything else fades away—there is no fear, no hesitation, just an overwhelming sense of belonging. I have performed numerous Bharatanatyam recitals in Bhopal, and each time, it felt like a new journey.

Competitions were another way dance challenged and shaped me. Winning trophies and medals was exciting, but the real reward was the experience—learning from fellow dancers, embracing constructive criticism, and constantly pushing myself beyond my limits. Each competition was a lesson in perseverance, resilience, and self-improvement.

Dancing Beyond the Stage

While performing on stage gives me an adrenaline rush, I don’t dance just for the applause. I dance when I am happy, sad, stressed, or excited. It is my way of processing emotions, of communicating when words fail me. There have been times when I felt overwhelmed, but a few minutes of dancing could lift my spirits. For me, dance is therapy, a sanctuary where I can be completely myself.

There are moments when people ask, “Why do you dance?” And my answer is always the same—because I cannot imagine a life without it. Dance is not just an activity; it is my identity, my expression, my joy, and my solace.

Lessons Dance Has Taught Me

Dance is not just about learning steps or performing on stage; it is a discipline that shapes one’s character. Here are a few invaluable lessons that dance has taught me:

  1. Discipline and Dedication – Hours of practice, perfecting each step, and refining expressions have instilled in me a strong work ethic. It has taught me that success is not instant but the result of patience and perseverance.

  2. Confidence and Grace – Performing in front of an audience has boosted my confidence. I have learned to own my movements, stand tall, and carry myself with grace—on and off the stage.

  3. Expressing Without Words – Bharatanatyam, with its rich abhinaya, has made me more expressive. I have learned to convey emotions through gestures and eyes, a skill that helps in everyday communication too.

  4. Resilience and Strength – Dance is physically demanding. The aches, bruises, and exhaustion have taught me resilience. No matter how tired I am, I push through—because the joy of dancing is worth every drop of sweat.

  5. Cultural Connection – Learning Bharatanatyam has deepened my appreciation for Indian culture and traditions. Every performance feels like paying tribute to the generations of dancers who preserved this art form.

The Future: Dance as a Lifelong Companion

As I move forward in life, I know that dance will always be a part of me. I may or may not become a professional dancer, but that doesn’t matter. I will dance because it makes me feel alive, because it is my truest form of self-expression.

One of my dreams is to continue performing and maybe even inspire others to embrace dance—not just as an art form but as a way of life. I hope to teach, to pass on the passion and knowledge I have gained, and to show others that dance is not just about movements but about feeling, storytelling, and self-discovery.

To anyone reading this who has a passion—whether it’s dance, music, painting, or any other art form—hold onto it, nurture it, and never let it go. Our passions define us, shape us, and make life more meaningful.
